What GardenBot Cannot Do

GardenBot helps organize houseplant care, reminders, plant records, photos, AI questions, and support workflows. It is not a guarantee that a plant will stay healthy, and it is not a replacement for expert advice in safety-sensitive situations.

This page exists because product limits are part of trust. If you know what GardenBot cannot do, you can use it more safely and interpret AI or reminder output with the right expectations.

GardenBot Is Not an Expert Safety Service

GardenBot is intended for general houseplant care assistance. It is not a professional horticulture, veterinary, medical, toxicology, emergency, or safety service.

Do not rely on GardenBot or AI output alone for decisions involving:

  • poisonous or irritating plants;
  • pets, children, allergies, or health;
  • edible plants;
  • pesticides, chemicals, fertilizers, mold, mushrooms, or hazardous materials;
  • urgent plant disease or infestation decisions;
  • rare, expensive, commercial, or high-value plants;
  • any situation where a wrong answer could cause harm.

For those cases, use an appropriate expert source. That may mean veterinary poison control, a local extension office, an experienced nursery, a toxicology source, or another qualified professional.

For AI-specific limits, see AI Plant Identification and AI Identification and Chat.

AI Can Be Wrong

AI can suggest likely plant IDs, care baselines, and possible causes of symptoms. It can also be incomplete, outdated, or wrong. A confident answer is not the same as a verified answer.

AI may struggle with:

SituationWhy it is risky
Poor photo qualityMissing traits lead to guesses
Immature plantsLeaves may not match mature examples
Lookalike houseplantsSeveral plants can share visible traits
Mixed potsOne photo may contain multiple species
Diagnosis from leaves aloneSoil, roots, light, and history may matter more
Safety decisionsConsequences can be higher than care mistakes

Use AI as a starting point. Compare alternatives, inspect the plant, and verify high-risk decisions elsewhere.

Reminders Are Convenience Tools

GardenBot can help organize reminders, but it cannot guarantee that a notification arrives exactly when expected. GardenBot schedules local iOS notifications; iOS controls final delivery.

Delivery can be affected by:

  • notification permission;
  • Focus modes;
  • Low Power Mode;
  • notification summary;
  • timezone and device time;
  • device state;
  • GardenBot reminder settings;
  • plant notification settings;
  • whether the app has refreshed recently.

For troubleshooting, see Plant Care, Reminders, and Notifications.

Offline Does Not Mean Everything Works Offline

Offline access helps keep local plant care moments useful. It does not mean every feature works without internet.

AI identification, AI chat, cloud sync, account changes, subscription checks, support feedback, remote configuration, and fresh remote data can require internet access. Offline data is also not the same as permanent backup. If you delete the app before sync or rely only on guest/local data, recovery may be limited.

For details, see Offline Plant Care and Privacy, Data, and Account Deletion.

GardenBot Cannot Make the Decision for You

Plant care still depends on observation. A reminder can tell you what is due. AI can suggest a direction. Notes can show what happened last time. But you still decide whether the plant is ready for water, whether a symptom is serious, and whether outside help is needed.

The safest pattern is:

  1. Use GardenBot to surface the plant and task.
  2. Inspect the plant and environment.
  3. Use AI or notes as context, not proof.
  4. Complete only the action that actually happened.
  5. Verify high-risk decisions with trusted sources.

This is especially important for overwatering, diagnosis, toxicity, pet safety, and chemicals.

If a suggestion feels surprising or high-stakes, slow down. Check the plant, read the relevant support page, and use an outside expert source when the consequence of a wrong answer would matter.
